Patek Philippe 5180/1R - Complications Self-Winding

The Patek Philippe Complications 5180/1R is one of the purest expressions of the skeletonizer's art, a fully openworked watch in 18k rose gold. Patek released it in 2017 to mark the 40th anniversary of its famous Caliber 240, and rather than hide that movement behind a dial, it strips the dial away entirely so the mechanism becomes the face of the watch. The blackened leaf-shaped hands float over the openwork, with hour markers carried on the sapphire crystal.

The movement is the ultra-thin self-winding Caliber 240 SQU, entirely skeletonized, decorated, and hand-engraved, with the engraving work alone accounting for around 130 hours. It runs at 3 Hz with roughly a 48-hour power reserve and winds via an off-centred micro-rotor, which on this reference carries the Patek Philippe Seal engraved directly into the gold. At just 6.7mm thick in a 39mm Calatrava-style case, it stays genuinely slim despite all the visible complexity, and the movement is on show front and back through the sapphire caseback.

It comes on Patek's supple rose gold mesh bracelet with a fold-over clasp, and is water resistant to 30 metres.
